How to choose the right lipstick for you
It is not easy to choose the right lipstick for youself as there are various colors and types of lipstick. We have some simple tips to choose kinds of lipsticks & color that will look best to you.
There are several types of lipstick formulas that offer different benefits...here are the most common ones, outlined below.
TRANSFER-RESISTANT means that the lipstick should last up to eight hours, unless you are eating something greasy or oily. This means your color won't come off, but it can feel dry on lips.
LONG-WEARING means it should stay put for four-six hours but will also probably feel dry. To balance the dryness, look for long-wearing formulas that also containing moisturizers like Vitamin E and aloe.
FROSTED means that the lipstick will be shimmery, glimmery and irridescent, due to light-reflecting ingredients in the formula.
MATTE means it will be colorful but opaque, making the pigments flat and non-shiny...this is often also a drying formula.
CREAM means the formula contains some light waxes like candelilla so your lips won't be as dry, but the formula tends to last for shorter amounts of time.
MOISTURIZING means the lipstick should be smooth and shiny and usually contains the moisturizing ingredients like Vitamin E and aloe...however, it won't last as long as some other formulas.
SATIN or SHEER means it will be glossy and full of moisture, but requires lots of reapplication. Usually has a high oil content and looks much darker in the tube than it will on your mouth. Think Clinique Black Honey!
Tips
-
Choose a color that complements your skin tone and the natural color of your lips.
-
Choose medium tones like pinks, peaches and beiges with orange or pink undertones if you have light hair and skin.
-
Try medium tones with richer colours, like caramel or deep pink, if you have dark hair and light skin.
-
Try any colour if you have medium skin and hair (though anything will look good, stick to lighter shades to bring out your rich skin).
-
If you have dark skin, wear plum, wine or deep red lipstick.
-
Brownish reds, light browns and raisin colors work best for olive skin tones.
-
Wear lighter shades during the daytime and darker shades when you go out at night. Lipsticks with a matte or cream finish provide for a more refined look during the day. Sheer, natural colors also make for great daytime looks. A glossier lipstick creates for an enchanting evening visage.
-
Test out different shades by visiting your local department store or drug store. Department store beauty counters will let you try products before you buy them and may offer free makeovers.
-
Take your eye makeup into consideration when choosing a shade. Deep or bold shades go best with light eye makeup; conversely, light or natural shades of lipstick best complement heavy eye makeup.
NOTE
- If you want just a hint of color, you'll want to opt for a colored lip gloss or lip tint over regular lipstick. Most cosmetic lines offer sheerer products for you to choose from.
- You'll want to test lipstick whenever possible. Just because a shade looks great in the tube, doesn't mean it'll look good on you.
-
If you want a FULL-LOOKING mouth, apply lipstick, then dab a small amount of lightweight concealer on the center of lips, blending it outward.
- If your lips are too full and you want them to look SMALLER, try a few things; emphasize other areas of your face, use a neutral lipstick color that looks natural, don't line your lips, and blot the color so there is just a hint of lipstick left.
- If you selected lipstick that looked great at the time but turned out to be TOO BRIGHT, mix a little foundation with some clear gloss or some vaseline and apply it over the lipstick to tone things down.
- To keep your lipstick off your TEETH, apply your color, blot, then hold your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around your finger, and slide finger out of mouth between lips. This should remove lipstick that would otherwise smear on your teeth.
