Protect Hair from Heat Damage

Quick tips to improve the condition of your hair is to simply use heat less often, but for some women, it’s difficult to do so. Lots of people use a hair dryer on an almost daily basis. Here is some advices on how to keep your hair healthy when heat styling daily.

  • The secret to healthy looking hair is to keep it moisturized. This is the reason why heat can be so damaging for your hair, because it dries out all the natural moisture.
  • So you should condition your hair to help replenish lost moisture and keep hair in good condition. The frequency and type of conditioner used will depend on the quality of your hair and whether or not your hair is color treated.
  • When you have time or stay at home, let your hair dry out naturally. This will give your hair a break from the heat of your hairdryer hair.
  • After washing your hair, carefully towel dries it then leave to dry naturally. If you usually wrap your hair in a towel when it’s wet, make sure not to wrap it up too tight as this will cause breakage.
  • When straightening your hair at home, you should use a straightening iron on dry hair.  The best way to straighten hair at home is to allow it to air dry and then straighten using a styling iron.  Wet hair is far more prone to damage than dry, so applying the heat of a blow dryer to wet hairstrenthening hair can cause immediate distress.
  • Before styling your hair using straighteners or curling tongs, ensure to use a heat protection serum, cream or spray.  After using a heat protection product, you may see a little steam come off your hair when styling using the tongs or straighteners. Don’t worry, this isn’t your hair burning, just a little moisture from the products evaporating.
  • Use a flat iron with a temperature gauge. Use a paper towel or brown paper to test the temperature. If it will burn through he paper, the heat may be too high. Just because your hair is kinky, course, or unruly does not mean that you need the highest level of heat. Applying too much heat to your hair will damage it.
  • Having your hair cut regularly at a professional hair stylist will ensure that any split ends are cut away and promotes growth of the hair.
